John James Diaries, 1841-1842.

Diary, May 16-Nov. 4, 1841, recording John's journey from Westport, Mo. to California with the Bartleson-Bidwell party. Differs somewhat from the version in Pt. II. Extracts from John Bidwell's journal, Oct. 20-Nov. 5, 1841, also copied into the volume. Also on the reel: John's diary, May 3-July 1842, covering his journey from California to Oregon Territory, via the Sacramento River to the Wilamette Valley, with two pages of notes at the end. John's diary, covering the journey from Missouri to California. Contains entries from May 16 - Aug. 20, 1841 only.

Bidwell was a noted early Calif. pioneer, landowner, and statesman. He helped form the Western Immigration Society in 1840, which led to the formation of the Bidwell-Bartleson wagon train, the first emigrant train to Calif. He travelled through Utah in 1841, then forged the Calif. immigrant trail. In 1846 he wrote the Bear Flag platform.
